When
you talk of
Indian prisons the
first image that
comes in your
mind is abode
of hardened criminals
having a safe
haven there enjoying
all lavishness. That’s true. Another
poignant fact of
Indian prisons is that
over 75 percent
of inmates here
are innocents languishing there
out of conspiracies
of sorts some
by their own
kins.
But the most
harrowing aspects of
Indian prisons is how the
female inmates here
are exploited to
core. Some of
them put themselves
to the sexual hawks
but the majority
are forced to
whet the sexual
appetite of criminals
lodged here, prison
officials and also
some politicians and
bureaucrats outside the
jail.
The
first encounter of
mine with such
a lady was at
Central Jail in
Purnia district in
Bihar where I too
was lodged ( why, it is
a long story).
That lady was
a Muslim. A beautiful
lady around 30
years of age and a
mother of two. She
was there for
various petty crimes. And
during the last one year
in jail ( her husband
had deserted her
and never applied
for bail) she was
aborted twice. Stranger was
the fact that the
abortions took place
inside the jail ( if she
was to be
believed) and by the
jail doctor. There was
a long list of
her rapists, from the
constable who served
food in her
ward to some
criminals lodged in the
jail to a jail
official.
Strangely the
story was known
to most of
prison inmates but
none had bothered
to oppose that
or come to
her rescue. When she
came to know
I was a
journalist and was
in jail for exposing sex
scandal of politicians
she tried to
contact me through another
Muslim inmate who
sold tea in that
prison. And then was
unfolded the story
of several other
victims. One inmate
when granted bail
and was to leave the
prison was pregnant
for four months
and her in
laws refused to take
her back. She
was leaving with her
parents. One unmarried girl who
was in prison for
killing her paramour ( she killed
him because he
with two accomplices raped
her) was raped
so brutally one
night that she
was taken to hospital
profusely bleeding. The
matter was hushed
up later.
Later
I was shifted
at Beur Jail at Patna after
an attempted killing of me by
some policemen led by
supritendent of policemen
inside the jail.
The Patna jail
was not that
different on that
score. But the unfortunate
fact was that
that the whole
episode was orchestrated
by a lady
inmate herself. That
lady was charged of
killing three of
her husbands ( after seeing her I wondered
whether she could
have even a single husband).
The female inmates
resisting her orders
were severely beaten
by her. We
often heard loud cries often
from female ward but
none went for
the rescue of
the victims. That
jail had a well
equipped hospital and
all the abortions
or wounds arising
out of rapes
were taken care
of there only.
A senior jail
official who was
related to a senior
politician ( that politician was
the man behind
the murder of
the person I
was charged of )
did not see
me eye to eye as
he apprehended that
I might disclose
everything after being released
from jail.
But
I had the
blessings of God
and I was
released after Central
Bureau of Investigation (CBI) failed
to find anything
against me. And don’t know
where are those
victim ladies or that
sordid game still
continues inside the jail. Yeah
I can only feel
pity for them
and can spread the story
to my readers.
